Use of Ozone for Sports Playing Fields

The use of ozone in the irrigation water for sports grounds such as football pitches, field hockey pitches, golf courses, cricket pitches and rugby pitches significantly improves the quality of the water used for turf maintenance. Thanks to its high oxidising and disinfecting power, ozone eliminates algae, bacteria, fungi and biofilm, preventing the blockage of sprinklers and irrigation systems. Furthermore, it increases the level of dissolved oxygen in the water, promoting a healthier, more vigorous and stress-resistant turf. When applied via sprinkler systems, ozone also acts on the surface of the turf, helping to improve hygiene conditions on the playing field. All of this results in improved turf quality, reduced maintenance costs and more sustainable water resource management.

Benefits of treating the playing surface with ozone

Ozone generator with recirculation tank for the treatment of playing fields

The use of ozone in irrigation water for sports pitches is an effective solution for improving both the water quality and the overall condition of the turf. Many sports grounds, particularly golf courses, football pitches, field hockey pitches and cricket pitches, use water from reservoirs, artificial lakes, wells or even reclaimed water, which may contain microorganisms, algae and organic matter capable of impairing the quality of the irrigation and affecting the growth of the turf. Furthermore, they could pose a risk to users, as bacteria such as Legionella could enter their respiratory tracts.

Ozone acts as a powerful disinfectant and oxidising agent, eliminating these contaminants without leaving any chemical residues, as it reverts to oxygen once it has reacted.

Its use helps to keep irrigation systems clean, reducing the build-up of biofilm, scale and blockages in pipes, valves and sprinklers, which results in more uniform irrigation and lower maintenance costs. Furthermore, the increase in dissolved oxygen promotes root development and improves the turf’s resilience to intensive use, high temperatures and other stressful conditions. As this is a sprinkler irrigation system, the ozonated water comes into contact with the entire plant surface, helping to reduce the microbiological load on leaves and stems and improving the sanitary conditions of the soil.

The introduction of ozone treatment systems therefore makes it possible to achieve more uniform, healthy and durable playing surfaces, whilst optimising water consumption, reducing the use of chemicals and contributing to more sustainable and efficient management of sports facilities. For these reasons, ozone has become a technology offering high added value for managers seeking to maintain playing surfaces in the best possible condition all year round.

Why treat the lawn with ozonated water?

Irrigated football pitch turf

Disease control

Ozone has a much greater disinfecting power than traditional disinfectants. It quickly eliminates all types of microorganisms from both water and grass.

In the case of atomised water, it prevents the risk of Legionella for sportspeople and users.

Mejora la calidad del agua

Ozone enables you to use lower-quality water, such as water from urban reuse schemes or rainwater.

By applying ozone, you will remove toxins, pesticides and plant protection products, and reduce COD, BOD, turbidity and microorganisms. It also completely eliminates unpleasant odours from the water and the cistern.

Improves the quality of the lawn

Applying ozonated water eliminates problems with the quality and density of the grass, as well as grass diseases such as dollar spot, which affects the greens.

The lawn is denser, more uniform, more vigorous and healthier.

ZonoSistem Case Studies in Playground Irrigation

Ozone generator for football pitch maintenance

Disinfection of an irrigation water cistern at a football pitch. Spain

This project involves the disinfection of irrigation water from the cistern. The water quality at this football pitch is essential for ensuring the best possible condition of the turf. That is why a professional, automatic ozone system is used. The concentration of ozone dissolved in the water is crucial for ensuring the system is properly controlled.

Real Madrid’s stadium, the Santiago Bernabéu, features the world’s most sophisticated turf irrigation and protection system. To monitor its quality, the club opted for Zonosistem equipment.

Golf course irrigation, Spain

Ozone is the most efficient method for disinfecting and improving the quality of irrigation water on a golf course. This water usually comes from reused water or drainage from the golf course itself. Zonosistem has designed an ozone injection system to ensure that 100 per cent of the irrigation water is disinfected before it is pumped out.

Frequently Asked Questions on the Use of Ozone in the Irrigation of Playing Fields

No, absolutely not. Ozone, at the recommended doses, has only positive effects. The oxidative doses are a far cry from the application doses required. That is why this technology is such a safe and highly effective tool, both for foliar treatment and for irrigation systems.

Yes, ozone can be used on virtually all types of sports turf and grass, as it does not act directly on the plant like a herbicide or fertiliser, but rather on the irrigation water.

It is compatible with the species most commonly used in:

  • Football and rugby pitches: Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon), ryegrass (Lolium perenne), fescue (Festuca arundinacea).
  • Golf courses: Bermuda grass, bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera), annual bluegrass.
  • Field hockey and cricket: various mixtures of ryegrass, Bermuda grass and other species suited to the local climate.
  • Landscaped areas and public parks.

The benefits are generally similar regardless of the species: improved microbiological water quality, reduced algae and biofilm in the irrigation system, increased oxygenation and improved turf health.

Installation takes place in the pump room, where storage tanks may be fitted; these can be treated to ensure the water is disinfected, or the injection of ozone into the pressurised irrigation line can be considered. Portable equipment is also available for foliar treatments using sprayers.
