Use of Ozone in Fish Farms

The use of ozone in fish farms offers an efficient and sustainable solution for improving water quality. Its high oxidising power enables it to eliminate bacteria, viruses and organic matter, reducing the microbiological load without the use of chemicals. It also reduces ammonia and nitrite levels.

This results in a cleaner environment, better visibility in the tanks and more controlled and profitable aquaculture production.

It operates automatically, without the need for manual labour, and reduces turbidity, COD, BOD, colour and taste, providing clean, crystal-clear water. Ozone also provides additional dissolved oxygen, which helps to stimulate the fish’s metabolism and growth.

Suitable for saltwater or freshwater fish farms, RAS or open systems.

Are you having problems with water hygiene at your fish farm?

Ozone generator for fish farms

The use of ozone in fish farms is the most effective way of breaking the cycle of waterborne infections and drastically reducing mortality rates. As an instant-acting disinfectant, ozone eliminates viruses, bacteria and parasites without leaving any chemical residues, thereby significantly reducing the use of antibiotics and other medicines. This improved biosecurity not only protects your investment, but also guarantees a higher-quality and healthier end product for the consumer.

One of the greatest challenges in aquaculture is the build-up of organic matter, ammonia and nitrites, which jeopardise the survival of fish species. The ZonoSistem system selectively oxidises these compounds, transforming them into inert substances whilst simultaneously increasing the levels of dissolved oxygen in the tank. This optimisation of the aquatic environment reduces stress in the fish and promotes faster, more uniform growth, thereby improving the profitability of each production cycle.

Finally, the integration of our ozone generators enhances the performance of your water treatment plant by acting as a natural micro-flocculant. This facilitates the retention of suspended solids and improves water clarity, resulting in a reduced need for flow renewal and less frequent maintenance of the filtration systems.

With ZonoSistem, you get an automated solution that ensures a balanced, efficient ecosystem that is fully compliant with the most stringent environmental regulations.

Benefits of using ozone in your fish farm

Ozone has far greater disinfecting power than traditional disinfectants. It rapidly eliminates all types of pathogenic microorganisms. By injecting ozone into the water at your fish farm, you will ensure that no diseases enter via your inflow water.

Improves water quality

By adding ozone to the water at the fish farm, you will remove toxins, pesticides and plant protection products, and reduce COD, BOD, turbidity and microbial levels. This means that the fish will grow more healthily, with lower mortality rates and fewer infections.

Boost productivity

By eliminating pathogenic organisms, we will reduce mortality, the fish will be healthier and will gain weight more quickly. Productivity improves, enabling the use of the best water purification and disinfection systems.

No manual labour, fully automatic

The system automatically generates and injects ozone into the tank, without the need for manual labour. It simply needs to be connected to the tank and a power socket.

No chemical storage

Ozone is generated on site and applied immediately, so it does not require the storage or handling of chemicals, eliminates the need for transport and reduces the carbon footprint.

Biocide recognised by ECHA

Ozone is included on the European Chemicals Agency’s (ECHA) list of biocides, and ZonoSistem has all the necessary documentation for its proper authorisation and use

ZonoSistem case studies: the use of ozone in fish farms

Salmon fish farm in Georgia

Ozone for salmon farms, Georgia

This project involves an ozone generation system with a production capacity of 2 kg/h, designed to disinfect 100 per cent of the incoming seawater flow at a salmon farm.

The water, which comes directly from the Black Sea near the coast, is heavily contaminated with organic matter and excessive levels of microorganisms, which hinder the development and growth of the salmon.

Ozone generator for fish farms

Ozone generator for RAS fish farms. Spain

This project includes a 3 kg/h ozonation system fuelled by LOX, with the aim of reducing the organic and microbiological load in the RAS system’s recirculation loop. The ozone is injected into various skimmers, where the ozone dose and ORP of each line are monitored.

LOX-powered ozone generator for fish farms

Ozone for fish farming, yellowtail, Spain

The project includes a 500 g/h ozone generation system fuelled by LOX. The ozone is injected into the seawater inlet at the contact chamber, which is fitted with a grid of titanium diffusers, in order to ensure the hygiene of the water entering the system.

Monitoring ORP and dissolved ozone is essential to ensure that the water is disinfected without harming the fish. It includes automatic and remote control, with data logging and redundant safety systems.

Ozone generator for fish farms

Ozone for a sturgeon fish farm, Spain

Ozone is injected into fresh water sourced from a river in order to oxidise and remove contaminants such as MIB and geosmin. These compounds affect the quality of sturgeon meat and caviar.

Ozone is injected into a contact tank before the water enters the fish farm. It improves dissolved oxygen levels and overall water quality.

Ozone generator for a sole fish farm

Ozone for a sole fish farm, Spain

This project comprises two 2 kg/h LOX-powered ozone generators, designed to inject ozone into six different Skymer lines within the wastewater treatment system at RAS fish farms. The system includes a distribution manifold to supply ozone and automatically distribute it to each line. The system operates automatically and remotely, records data and ensures the safety of the fish using ORP probes.

Frequently asked questions about the use of ozone in fish farms

Ozone is an extremely fast-acting disinfectant that eliminates viruses, bacteria and parasites present in water without leaving any chemical residues. By maintaining a pathogen-free environment, it prevents the outbreak of diseases, thereby drastically reducing the mortality rate and the need for antibiotic treatment.

Yes, ozone directly oxidises organic matter, ammonia and nitrites, converting them into less toxic compounds. Furthermore, by increasing dissolved oxygen levels, it promotes the activity of nitrifying bacteria in biofilters, maintaining the chemical balance of the water even at high fish densities.

Ozone acts as a natural micro-flocculant, causing fine and colloidal particles to clump together so that they can be more easily retained by sand or drum filters. This improves water clarity, reduces the frequency of filter backwashing and optimises the energy consumption of the entire water treatment system.
