Use of ozone in tanks containing osmotised, distilled and ultrapure water

Osmotised, distilled and ultra-pure water is widely used in industry as a base for producing a wide range of formulations, in the manufacture of food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, chemical and cleaning products, amongst others. If you store the water in a buffer tank, you will need a continuous disinfection system that ensures constant hygiene in the tank, the pipework and the water itself, without leaving any traces that could alter the taste, smell or composition of your product.

Ozone is a highly effective method for sanitising and disinfecting tanks, reservoirs, pipework and the water itself, without leaving any traces of chemicals that might alter its composition. Furthermore, as the ozone is generated on-site, there is no need to transport or store chemicals. The ozone generator extracts oxygen from the air, converts it into ozone using electrical discharges, and injects it into the water in the tank via its injection and contact system. The system only requires a power socket and to be connected to the tank you wish to treat. The system operates fully automatically, without the need for manual labour. It is also environmentally friendly.

Any issues with the hygiene of osmosis-treated water?

Industrial ozone generator for the disinfection of osmosis water

The disinfection of osmosis water is essential in the food industry and on bottling lines, as this type of water can easily become contaminated and promote the formation of biofilm in pipes and tanks. These risks have a direct impact on product quality and food safety.

Traditional chlorine-based systems can leave traces that alter recipes and pose risks associated with the use and storage of chemicals. For this reason, chlorine-free disinfection using ozone is emerging as an effective and sustainable solution.

The use of ozone for biofilm removal and industrial disinfection helps to reduce chemical consumption, optimise cleaning times and minimise environmental impact. Furthermore, it improves operational efficiency and ensures greater protection of process water quality.

The deployment of an ozone disinfection system using osmosis-treated water represents a commitment to safety, industrial sustainability and cost optimisation in the food and drink industry.

Benefits of disinfecting osmosis water with ozone

A glass of water about to overflow

Without changing your recipe

Traditional chemicals can leave traces that alter the flavours, smells or composition of your recipes. Ozone (O₃) is a molecule made up of three oxygen atoms; it is chemically very reactive, but it quickly breaks down into oxygen (O₂), leaving no residue and without altering your recipe.

Pipe systems disinfected and cleaned with ozonated water

Maximum disinfection

Osmotised water becomes contaminated easily, which is why it needs to be disinfected continuously. Unlike disinfection using an ultraviolet lamp, ozone ensures that both the water and the entire industrial water system are disinfected. It also removes and prevents biofilm from forming in the pipes without leaving any residue.

Contaminated spill on the surface

Save money and reduce your carbon footprint

Traditional disinfection is costly and has a significant environmental impact. By using ozone, you can reduce your consumption of chemicals, hot water and the number of rinses required. Reduce your wastewater discharge by using only ozonated water to disinfect the water, the tank and the osmosis water pipes.

No manual labour, fully automatic

The system automatically generates and injects ozone into the tank, without the need for manual labour. It simply needs to be connected to the tank and a power socket.

No storage of chemicals

Ozone is generated on site and applied immediately, so it does not require the storage or handling of chemicals, eliminates the need for transport and reduces the carbon footprint.

Biocide recognised by ECHA

Ozone is included on the European Chemicals Agency’s (ECHA) list of biocides, and ZonoSistem holds all the necessary documentation for its proper authorisation and use

ZonoSistem case studies in osmosis, distilled and ultrapure water storage tanks

Ozone generator for a soft drinks manufacturer

Soft drinks manufacturer, Spain

Ozone ensures the hygiene of both the water and the tanks containing stored osmotised water. Ozone is the best technology as it guarantees disinfection without altering the composition of the water and, consequently, without altering the product’s formulation. The hygiene maintenance dose is kept constant at 0.25 ppm via an automatic control system.

Installation of recirculation systems for the disinfection of osmosis-treated water

Detergent manufacturer, Valencia, Spain

For over a decade, this project has been maintaining osmotised water to hygiene standards with ozone levels of 0.2 ppm. In addition, occasional shock treatments are carried out using doses of 0.8 ppm for the bottling lines. A master PLC ensures automatic operation and data logging. The project includes a GRZO-series industrial ozone generator, feeding two HIDRO V recirculation systems where ORP and PPM are measured.

Ozone generator for a distilled water manufacturer

Distilled water manufacturer, Valencia, Spain

This system disinfects distilled water stored in stainless steel tanks. The ozone concentration of 0.25 ppm ensures the disinfection of both the water and the surfaces of the tank and its circuits. The tank has a continuous supply of bottled water, and the ozone system is capable of maintaining a constant dose of dissolved ozone thanks to the PID proportional power control designed by ZonoSistem.

Ozone generator for a manufacturer of cleaning and personal care products

Manufacturer of cleaning and personal care products, Extremadura, Spain

Two HIDRO V GRZO industrial-grade ozone treatment plants are responsible for disinfecting the process water used in the manufacture of cleaning and personal hygiene products. This water must be free from any traces of biocides; to achieve this, ozone is used to ensure disinfection, alongside a UV system to destroy any residual ozone that may remain in the water at the time the formulation is prepared.

Hydro plant for the generation of ozone for the disinfection of distilled water

Manufacturer of distilled water and industrial cleaning products, Murcia. Spain

ZonoSistem has designed a system for installation in the recirculation loop of distilled water storage tanks. The ozone system consists of a HIDRO VT pressurised in-line treatment unit that ensures a constant dose of dissolved ozone throughout the entire volume of water. The system includes ORP and PPM measurement.

Installation of an ozone generation system in ultrapure water tanks

Manufacturer of personal care products, Spain

A new project to maintain the hygiene of ultrapure water used in the manufacture of personal care products. Ozone ensures the disinfection of the water and surfaces in two 200 m² stainless steel tanks through which a flow rate of around 50 m³/h circulates continuously.

Frequently asked questions about the use of ozone in osmosis, distilled and ultrapure water storage tanks

As osmotised water has very low mineral content and virtually no residual disinfectant, it is particularly susceptible to microbiological contamination during storage. Ozone helps to keep the tank sanitised at all times, preventing the growth of bacteria, fungi and biofilm on the walls and in the pipes. Furthermore, it acts as an in situ disinfectant, without the need to add persistent chemicals.

The appropriate concentration depends on the tank volume, the water temperature and the level of microbiological risk. In typical applications, low, controlled concentrations are used to maintain a slight residual level of dissolved ozone sufficient to prevent microbial growth, without causing over-oxidation; these values range between 0.15 and 0.35 ppm. It is advisable to design the system with automatic dosing control and continuous monitoring to ensure operational stability and safety.

No. Ozone does not adversely affect the conductivity or the low mineralisation characteristic of osmotised water. As it breaks down rapidly into oxygen, it leaves no chemical residues or persistent by-products when applied correctly. In fact, it helps to maintain the microbiological quality of the water during storage, particularly in large-volume tanks or those with prolonged retention times.
